Featuring breathtaking show tunes by Jule Styne, brilliant lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and an excellent book by Arthur Laurents, this classic Broadway musical is set to wow audiences in the West End for the first time in four decades... and its pre-transfer reviews were very good indeed. So what's in store?
According to The Independent the star of the show, Imelda Staunton, “delivers a knock-out performance". The Times newspaper calls it “The most exciting thing I have seen on a stage", high praise indeed. And the Mail on Sunday calls it a “dazzling revival" . The signs are great for a show inspired by the real-life memoirs of the infamous US entertainer and burlesque artist Gypsy Rose Lee.
This is the story of Momma Rose and her two daughters, Baby June and Louise. They make a living travelling the USA with a popular family vaudeville act. But things are changing fast and audience numbers are falling. While the two girls have their own secret ambitions, nothing will ever be the same again and the onslaught of burlesque is about to hit the family hard. Directed by Jonathan Kent with choreography by Stephen Mear, it's genuinely un-missable stuff. Go see it!
