You despise your boss. He's a sleazy, sexist bully. You want revenge. When three perfectly ordinary working women, all secretaries, fulfil their fantasies of taking over the business from their horrible boss, chaos ensues... and it's absolutely hilarious. The movie 9-5 is a 1980 American comedy directed by Colin Higgins. It stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton. It grossed more than $103.9 million at the box office and remains the 20th highest-grossing comedy film ever. Dolly Parton, who wrote the songs and lyrics, was an established singer, musician and songwriter at the time, but it launched her into mainstream culture. The rest is history.
Now the 2008 musical of the movie is in London, in the West End for a strictly limited season, and the word on the streets is people will be grabbing tickets the moment they come out. If Dolly is your icon, you'll love it. It stars Louise Redknapp, Amber Davies, Natalie McQueen and Brian Conley. And it is, as you'd expect, stuffed full of glorious tunes by Dolly Parton, uplifting and fun, with all your old 9-5 favourites plus a few amazing new ones. The movie is number 74 on the American Film Institute's 100 Funniest Movies list. The musical is tipped as a side-splitter too. Come and see it for yourself.
