Sunday in the Park with George
It's unusual. It's charming. It stars the fabulous Jake Gyllenhaal and the equally brilliant Annaleigh Ashford, who plays the elder Seurat’s neglected lover. This remarkable musical fictionalises the French post-impressionist painter Georges Seurat's life. In the musical he has children, in real life neither of his children survived infancy and he had no grandchildren. And Seurat's common-law wife didn't go to America, she died from cirrhosis of the liver at the tragic age of 35. This awesome show is packed with surprises and full of superb show tunes courtesy of Stephen Sondheim. You'll adore No Life, Color and Light, The Day Off, Everybody Loves Louis, The One on the Left and more.
The book of the musical comes from James Lapine. The story is inspired by the French post-impressionist painter Georges Seurat's masterpiece of a pointillist painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. The story revolves around a fictional Seurat and his equally fictional great grandson, another George and a cynical artist who encounters the same problems as his famous ancestor, this time in modern Chicago. This is a fantastic musical that has won numerous awards. It's waiting for you at the Savoy theatre in 2020. Will we see you there?
